MBFWA 2016 Highlights

Camaraderie, creativity, entertainment, good beats, innovation, champagne and excitement! This year I was invited to cover Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia (MBFWA) for this blog and for next month’s (June) issue of Citizen Magazine. A first for me.  Opportunities are opportunities and I’m always game for new challenges. And so I attended what turned out to be a big week of Australian talent being showcased and a week of fun at Sydney’s Carriageworks.  Here’s my recap and highlights.

All photos courtesy of my pal Enrico Becker unless otherwise stated.

From the Maticevski opening show.

Prior to attending the shows, I gave a lot of thought about how I wanted to report on MBFWA. What do people really want to know? I asked my friends who don’t work in the industry and also those who do. What would be interesting to read about? Does anyone actually care what the latest “trend” is or do we only care because mainstream media tells us to?… Is it perhaps more interesting to dispel the myths about an industry so frequently criticised and stereotyped… What really goes on backstage?…

Sonia_Allen_Makeup_Sydney_MBFWA_2016_4

The hair and makeup from Maticevski.

Not sure I wanted to take any of those angles, I kept an open mind throughout the week and chatted to as many stylists/models/designers/PR people/makeup artists/hairstylists/photographers and guests as possible, hoping somewhere along the way an idea would come to me. And it did. Because I had a really fun week. For so many reasons… And that is what I would love to share.  In 7 points…

1) CELEBRATION

It felt great to be able to celebrate with and support all the hard work of my peers. From watching a childhood friend debut her jewellery label on the Zhivago Runway…

“The best part of Fashion Week was seeing El Minara on the runway. To think that one year ago I was learning jewellery making in the grand bazaar in Istanbul and now it is in Australia’s most prestigious fashion event… It was a real moment to see how far I have come.”

To seeing models I’ve worked with in the past lighting up the runway and having fun backstage…

Sonia_Allen_Makeup_Sydney_MBFWA_2016_9

Backstage at Emma Mulholland, Vivien’s model Woan Ni (right) told me her fashion week highlights included the “mega makeover at Emma Mulholland, being blinged up with Swarovski at Tome and working with old and new friends”.

And watching friends star in fashion films…

Five Twenty Management’s Kirsty (left) starring in Marie Schuller’s ‘Three Women Arrive’ fashion film which screened at Fashion Week and showcased three Australian designers.

Kirsty said her fondest memory was the vibe at Carriageworks.

Sonia_Allen_Makeup_Sydney_MBFWA_2016_11

“There were so many different styles and trends happening that there was always something to see. I could have people watched for an eternity!”

2) THE BEATS

I often say if I wasn’t a makeup artist I’d be a DJ and boy was the music phenomenal this year! Something for everyone-  LL Cool J sampled with Vanilla Ice(!), Salt-N-Pepa, Stormzy, What So Not, The White Lamp, Gesaffelstein and even Marilyn Manson made an appearance.   Thanks DJ Sveta and DJ Sam Francisco for keeping my Shazam app very active during shows!

And then there was my personal favourite, so catchy it became my theme song of the week, Riton & Kah-Lo’s Rinse & Repeat. You know the one…

“Time to make the club go up, time to shut the club down

This is not how I woke up, but it’s how I look now”…

Sonia_Allen_Makeup_Sydney_MBFWA_2016_1

3) BACKSTAGE BUZZ

Backstage is where the magic happens before it happens some more on the runway. Hanging backstage and watching the final touches come together was fun, nothing like the adrenalin rush of backstage.

Sonia_Allen_Makeup_Sydney_MBFWA_2016_12 Sonia_Allen_Makeup_Sydney_MBFWA_2016_13 Sonia_Allen_Makeup_Sydney_MBFWA_2016_14 Sonia_Allen_Makeup_Sydney_MBFWA_2016_15 Sonia_Allen_Makeup_Sydney_MBFWA_2016_16 Sonia_Allen_Makeup_Sydney_MBFWA_2016_17 Sonia_Allen_Makeup_Sydney_MBFWA_2016_18 Sonia_Allen_Makeup_Sydney_MBFWA_2016_19 Sonia_Allen_Makeup_Sydney_MBFWA_2016_20 Sonia_Allen_Makeup_Sydney_MBFWA_2016_21 Sonia_Allen_Makeup_Sydney_MBFWA_2016_backstage

4) LEARNING SOMETHING NEW

Attending shows with my good friend and Creative Director of Elevate Styling, Orla Molloy, I loved cross-checking our highlights from each show because obviously we both approach fashion from different perspectives. Molloy is all about the clothes, I’m all about the highlight. Jokes aside, it was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the Australian designers and their collections. I now have a shopping list the size of my arm.

 5) PHENOMENAL PRODUCTION VALUE

The production value on some of the shows was enough to rival London’s West End.

My personal favourite was at Zhivago where they breathed life into cult classic 1992 film Death Becomes Her. Creative Director Matt Jordan (Mother Father PR) enlisted choreographer Porter James to open the show with a riveting cabaret act (performed by theatre starlet Christie Whelan-Browne), who backed by a troupe of male dancers, performed a modernised arrangement of “I See Me” from the film.

Touted as a subversive adaptation, set in the digital age, ZHIVAGO’s Death Becomes Her has been labelled as “examination of fashion and beauty through the fractured lens of social media”. – Zhivago, 2016

6) THE INNOVATORS

The new faces of Australian Fashion. So fresh and too cool. Known as The Innovators, the six graduates from prestigious Fashion Design Studio showcased their collections and I can’t thank them enough for daring to be different and for giving me so many WOW moments.

My top four designers…

Kakopierosa collection designed to create an immaterial reaction/emotion within the subject.

Take a moment to admire these works of art.

(Photos by Stefan Gosatti/Getty Images)

And the facial adornments- designed by Demetra Kakopieros and brought to life by German jewellery designer Lisa KW.  Models had to have numbing cream applied prior to the attachments.  Now that’s dedication to your craft.

Sonia_Allen_Makeup_Sydney_MBFWA_2016_Innovators_Kakopieros_2

(Photos by Stefan Gosatti/Getty Images)

Oxblood- the “Revolt” collection was based on the concept of a “second movement”, a second punk movement (yes please!). Dreaming into the future of what this second uprising, mutiny or riot would look like, how the young “hooligans” would dress in defiance and what technologies they would use.

This collection had me dying to go back to London, tame my mane into a mohawk and get amongst it!

Jessica Vanoffered quirky womenswear, with transitional evening pieces and focused on natural textiles and textures. Her collection “Experiment 1” showcased the exploration of the Australian desert and native bushland using hand painted print work.

Draping to die for!

IpsenPain and constriction disguised by beauty is the inspiration for this collection. The concept was explored throughout the collection within the textures and techniques of the garments.

Adore and admire.

7) PARTY TIME!

And finally, Fashion Week was a great opportunity to see so many people I had worked with. When you’re a freelancer, you don’t go to an office or designated workspace every day and you don’t see the same people 9-5pm. Every day is different. So from a social aspect, this was like a week-long Christmas party. No one needs to ask me twice!

Sonia_Allen_Makeup_Sydney_MBFWA_2016_2

And that’s a wrap! If you want to know more about the fashion and beauty from the runway, keep your eye out for next month’s issue of Citizen Mag where I’ll be recapping all the key looks.  As always, feel free to leave and comments or questions below.

Sant Elia ‘Taken by the Sky’ Resort 17 Campaign Shoot

They say sharing is caring, so I’m going to share one of my favourite campaign shoots. Bringing someone’s collection to life and creating imagery that captures the essence of the designs is in my opinion, what a campaign shoot is all about. I recently had the privilege of being asked by Stephanie from SE by Sant Elia to design the makeup for their resort 17 collection, “Taken by the Sky”. A collection that is all about “1970s boho luxury with an effortless twist, European vintage glam and free spirits, reinterpreted into modern and relevant shapes” this is what we created.

This was shot in a motel that looked like it had been The team behind this shoot comprised:

Photography: Jason Henley // Stylist: Jana Bartolo // Hair: Nathan Cherrington // Makeup: Sonia Allen // Model: Pauline from Chic Management // Creative Direction: Mother Father PR

I loved so many pieces of this collection and my wish list kept growing as the day progressed! I asked Stephanie who she had in mind when she was designing and she told me that she wanted to create a wardrobe of wearable yet show-stopping occasion pieces, that were luxurious and flattering on the female figure.

“The collection has a touch of cheekiness, it’s for a woman who likes to get noticed but doesn’t take herself too seriously”.

My favourite from the collection was the The Edge of Seventeen jumpsuit while for Steph it was the lace co-ord pant and top set from the “Bird in Flight” story which only just last week spotted being worn by Ally from Substance Style Blog to Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Sydney.

Sonia_Allen_Makeup_Blog_Sant_Elia_7

Photography by Sebastian Petrovski and image courtesy of Broadsheet Sydney.

For the makeup I created a look that I like to call “undone glamour” which took influence from the 1970s but is wearable for the modern woman. The skin was creamy and glowing, the cheekbones illuminated, the eyes were metallic golden amber with lots and lots of lashes and liquid liner. Brows were groomed and defined while lips were a mix of pink and brown lipstick blended with Egyptian Magic balm.

Sonia_Allen_Makeup_Blog_Sant_Elia_8

For the skin I used the Hylamide SubQ Anti-age serum for that lit from within glow, the Natralus Pawpaw Lip Butter to prep and condition the lips and the Jane Iredale Pommisst Hydrating Spray to refresh the makeup throughout the day. For the complexion I used the Touch In Sol Feels Like Honeymoon Primer for the most wonderful surge of moisture, the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser and the Jane Iredale Enlighten Concealer to brighten under the eyes. For the lips it was the Avon Luxe Lipsticks in “Nude Citrino” & “Diamante Rosa”  mixed together with some Egyptian Magic balm for that perfect cream texture.

You can follow the SE by Sant Elia label on Instagram or get in touch via the website.

I loved being part of this campaign shoot and I hope you enjoyed reading how it all came together.  Please let me know if you have any questions about the products used or how I worked with them. Now I’m off to do some shopping!

Together with photographers Angela Rose and Natasha Foster supporting me behind the lens, the Sonia Allen Makeup Bridal Series Sydney comes to life.

Here’s a teaser of what to expect…

The Bridal Series will run over the next six weeks on the blog. Each week I will be featuring one designer and showcasing their boutique and couture creations. There will also be a supporting post dedicated to the hair and make-up design where I talk through how I created the look for each model in this series. I will showcase the products used, as well share my inspiration behind the hair and make-up looks.

Sonia_Allen_Make_Up_The_Blog-KWH-15

If you’re getting married, this Bridal Series is like your direct link to some of Australia’s finest talent. If you love make-up or want to learn more about skincare and hairstyling, read the make-up posts- they are full of my tips and advice. And if like me, you are passionate about supporting Australian designers, enjoy getting to know each one, just as I did.

I’d like to thank Angela and Natasha for your wonderful photography, I couldn’t have shot this without you (literally!).  I’d also like to thank all the beautiful models along with my sponsors Make Up Forever, Ardell, Indeed Labs & Label M for supporting this project and whose products we used throughout the shoots.  As a working makeup artist and hairstylist, these are brands that you will most definitely find in my kit and it was great to collaborate for this project.

It was a privilege to work alongside these designers and I can’t wait to share this project with you all!

A young old-Hollywood

One of the best parts of my job is that I get to work with young up and coming talent.  Damon from London Model Management was no exception.  Together with photographer Patrick Mackey, we shot Damon in a variety of light setups and kept the styling minimal.

Sonia_Allen_Make_Up_The_Blog-editorial-shoot

This one was my favourite from the series.  I’m always a sucker for a good black and white and the lighting here is spot on!

People often ask me if I do make-up for men too. Yes. I do. Pretty much any male you see photographed or appearing on TV (unless they are playing sport!) are wearing make-up. The purpose isn’t to make them look like they’re wearing make-up the way you might when working with a female, instead it’s to ensure that they are “camera ready” and don’t look washed out under the studio lights.

At only 18 years of age, there was something about Damon that reminded me of the old Hollywood classics.

The youth of Farley Granger…

Sonia_Allen_Make_Up_The_Blog-Farley Granger 1943

Farley Granger for ‘The North Star’, Samuel Goldwyn Company. Photographed by Margaret Bourke-White, 1943.

The confidence of Marlon Brando…

Sonia_Allen_Make_Up_The_Blog-Marlon Brando-1950

Marlon Brando for ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’, Warner Brothers. Photographed by John Engstead, 1950.

The intensity of Rock Hudson…

Sonia_Allen_Make_Up_The_Blog-Rock Hudson-1961

Rock Hudson for ‘Lover Come Back’, Universal. Photographed by Leo Fuchs, 1961.

And the broodiness (and awesome hair!) of Clint Eastwood…

Sonia_Allen_Make_Up_The_Blog-Clint Eastwood-1956

Clint Eastwood, RKO. Photographed by Ernest A. Bachrach, 1956.

We really tried to channel that in this series of images and I love the final result.  From a make-up perspective, it was all about working with the light to add more angular dimensions to Damon’s face.  For his hair, I worked with his natural body and switched it up from slick Clint Eastwood-style to more relaxed for the colour shots.

Some of my other favourite shots…

While shooting, Damon told me he’d given up going to schoolies with his friends in Fiji to stay back and work on building his book.  With an attitude like that Damon, you’ll no doubt go far!

Please feel free to leave me any questions or comments below if you want to know more about this shoot.

2016: I’m baaaack!

It’s 2016 and I’m back to posting!  I’ve been working hard behind-the-scenes since taking a short break from the blog last year and have a few exciting things to share.

I am super pleased to announce that I now have a team working for the bridal side of my business- Sonia Allen Bridal Make Up.  They are a wonderfully talented bunch of artists with international, Fashion Week and bridal experience.  We’ve hit 2016 armed with the commitment to delivering excellent service to our clients and so far, sooooo good!

Sonia_Allen_Bridal_Make_Up

With the help of my friends Angela Rose Photography, Orla from Elevate Styling and Elly Hanson taming my locks (aka frizz!) we created this new headshot for me.  For someone who prefers to be on the other side of the camera, it certainly was a step outside of my comfort zone but making it a fun experience made all the difference.  Thanks ladies!

Sonia Allen Make Up Headshot

I landed my biggest beauty writing spread to date in the “Peace” issue of Citizen magazine where they also used my images to support the article. I wrote about Beauty Brands Making the World More Beautiful which was very in keeping with the theme of “peace”.  A little snapshot below.

Sonia_Allen_Make_Up_The_Blog-Citizen-Magazine-Spread

I got to film with the lovely Melina Vidler and the team for the AACTA Awards.  We had the beautiful Walsh Bay and Sydney Harbour as our backdrop on a scorching hot day.

Sonia_Allen_Make_Up_The_Blog-AACTA-Awards-Melina-Vidler

In January I flew to Adelaide to make up a beautiful bride and was lucky enough to be invited to the wedding. This was the spectacular view of the River Murray and was also the backdrop when the bride and groom said “I do”.  Travel + make up = Super happy Sonia!

I’d like to take a quick moment to thank Mr Allen who has taken a break from his MBA studies to give me a hand.  He has been working tirelessly behind-the-scenes on the non-creative elements of the business (aka accounting, strategic planning, IT and marketing- the fun stuff right!?) while still working full time.  And they say men can’t multitask!  Pffft. What a legend!Sonia_Allen_Make_Up_The_Blog_Mr_Allen

And finally, in a few weeks I have something HUGE to share with you… It’s something I’ve been working on for the last six months and it’s been part of the reason why I haven’t had the chance to get back to regular blogging as soon as I would have liked.  I’ll be announcing the launch on my social media and of course on here….  I’m about as excited as a pup with two tails!

I hope 2016 has also started on a high for you all and I’m so happy to be back!

Shooting Beauty

An artist never stops growing, improving, learning and experimenting.  I am constantly pushing myself to develop my craft and technique because challenges are what keep you driving forward.  Putting words into action, I recently shot with photographer Patrick Mackey to create a series of beauty images.  The purpose of the shoot was to try new techniques in a setting where only your creativity was the limit.

Our model was the lovely Cristina from London Model Management and together this is what we created…

Sonia_Allen_Make_Up_The_Blog-Beauty-Shots-2

The first look was soft and natural. Well defined brows and neutral tones on the lips and eyes.

I focused on keeping the skin looking fresh and added a softly bronzed contour to bring dimension to Cristina’s face.  I blowdried Cristina’s hair using my H2d hairdryer and ran the irons over it for a sleek slightly ’90s look.  Nails were painted my favourite nude shade by L’Oreal “Rose Paradise“.

Sonia_Allen_Make_Up_The_Blog-Beauty-Shots-1

In black and white this translates to:

Reminds me of a Calvin Klein ad!

Reminds me of a Calvin Klein ad!

The next look I created featured a white graphic liner design.  Graphic liner is one of my favourite things to play around with on editorial shoots and what better time to practice than on a beauty shoot where precision and symmetry is everything.

Sonia_Allen_Make_Up_The_Blog-Beauty-Shots-5

Great pose and lighting set up makes for a strong shot!

I also like the graphic liner I did for this editorial which featured in Cellophane Magazine earlier this year.

Sonia_Allen_Make_Up_The_Blog-Graphic-Eyeliner-2

Model Woan Ni is one of my favourites and it’s always a pleasure shooting with her. Thank you for letting me get graphic on your face Woanster!

Then for something totally different, I decided to use some gold leaf for the final look.

Sonia_Allen_Make_Up_The_Blog-Beauty-Shots-4

The finale! In order to bring balance to this shot, I added stronger metallic gold eyeshadow along with liquid liner, a few false lashes and a glossy berry lip.

Working with gold leaf is never an easy process.  It is extremely time consuming and precision is a must along with a lot of patience and a sense of humour.  However when you get it right, the end result is always worth it.

These shots are now in my portfolio and serve as a reminder to never stop challenging myself and most importantly, to enjoy the ride along the way.  Shooting beauty with a fun team is a great way to do both.

You can view more of my beauty work here and read up on other editorials I’ve worked on here and here.

Hope you enjoyed this post.  As always, feel free to leave any comments or questions below!

One Fine Day Sydney recap

Happiness for me is sharing with others what I love. Last weekend I got to do just that at the One Fine Day Sydney wedding fair held at Australian Technology Park.

My stall was designed to reflect what my bridal work is all about. Partnering with brides in the lead up to their wedding as well as being there on the day itself to get them feeling beautiful and happy… and having fun along the way!

The fair had a wonderfully relaxed yet exciting buzz about it. Couples could enjoy treats created by ARIA catering in the VIP area, peruse the bridesmaid corner, or even enjoy a little pampering with a champagne at the nail bar.

New to this fair was the Bridal Showcase where brides had the chance to meet their favourite designers and try on gowns. Featured in the showcase were Moira Hughes, Karen Willis Holmes, Leah Da Gloria, Suzanne Harward, Sarah Janks, Babushka Ballerina.  Also featured in the showcase was lingerie by Bridal Trousseau and jewellery from Samantha Wills.

And of course there was plenty of fashion to admire on the runway.

If you are intrigued and would love to know more about the talented bunch behind this campaign, come visit us at the One Fine Day wedding fair taking place in Sydney on Saturday 12th & Sunday 13th September 10-3pm at Australia Technology Park, Eveleigh, NSW.

“The fair will be full of inspiration, food tastings, sparkling on arrival, food trucks, a bridal runway show and the opportunity to meet the best and most creative wedding vendors Sydney has to offer!”
- One Fine Collective

You may remember back in February I had my first ever stall at One Fine Day and you can see the recap here.  This time I’m going for a new look, thanks in part to the many hours of manual labour by Mr Allen.  I have also found myself to be somewhat of a handywoman and now feel as confident walking into a Bunnings as I do a make-up store.

I will be giving away a free double pass on my Instagram for one lucky winner starting on Monday 7th September.  To enter just regram the image and tag @sonia.allen.makeup and @onefinedayweddingfairs as well as #soniaallenmakeup and #onefinedaysydney.

Good luck to the winner and I look forward to seeing you there!
