Adam Dixon: THE HAIR AND MAKEUP by Sonia Allen

In this post I will talk through how I created the hair and makeup for Tanja, our model when I profiled Adam Dixon for The Bridal Series Sydney.

A modern contemporary upstyle with a sleek finish was the vision I had when creating the hair for this shoot. Think Kate Middleton crossed with Emma Watson…

Which looked a little something like this…

And like this from the side…

The key to achieving this style was building the volume while keeping the hair looking glossy and neat. To do this I worked the Label M Sleek Blow Out Cream into Tanja’s damp hair (works as a lightweight heat protector while sealing in moisture) and blowdried in the volume. I then tonged the hair into loose waves and applied the Soufflé to help define the curls once I brushed them out.

In action!

Before constructing the shape of the upstyle, I backcombed the crown section for some extra height and sprinkled on the Resurrection Style Dust for maximum root lift- the ultimate styling product for building and maintaining volume and texture!

Once I finished pinning the style into place I set it with the Hairspray and finished with a light spray of Shine Mist.

Tanja had oily combination skin and so I had to be careful not to use products that were too rich in texture for her skin. I used the Indeed Labs Hydraluron serum on the T-Zone in place of a moisturiser and then followed with the Hydraluron Moisture Jelly for the rest of the face.

I wanted to create a timeless makeup look to work alongside Adam Dixon’s gowns and I drew inspiration from the 1950s, in my opinion one of the most beautiful eras of makeup! Glowing skin, soft diffused shades of bronze and taupes on the eyes, lots of lashes and a bold lip. This look would be perfect for those who aren’t afraid of colour yet want a romantic look.

I used the Make Up Forever Mattifying Primer along the T-Zone to prevent excess shine and then stippled the Face & Body Foundation, building in areas where Tanja needed more coverage. Imperfections were corrected using the Full Cover Concealer and then I set everything with the Super Matte Loose Powder (great for mattifying without losing the “creaminess” of the skin texture).

I highlighted cheekbones with the Star Powder (in 943 “with pink highlights”) and used the Sculpting Blush in “Orange Coral”.

For the eyes I used the Aqua Cream in “Taupe” as an eyeshadow base and set with powder eyeshadows in similar tones. I drew the winged liner with the Graphic Liner Pen and finished with generous lashings of the Aqua Smoky Lash mascara.

I took Tanja’s lips from matte berry (Lip Liner Pencil in “26 Dusty Pink” with Rouge Artist Intense “34 Matte Light Raspberry” over the top) to glossy berry (by adding the Glossy Full Couleur gloss in “7 Fresh Rose”) then to a matte red for the finale (Aqua Lip liner in “08C Red” with Rouge Artist Intense in “M8 Matte Bright Red” over the top).

Tools of the trade with Make Up Forever.

For Tanja’s lashes, I used the Ardell Natural 117 black lashes to lengthen and thicken her natural lashes and bring balance to the overall look.

Et voila!

Rosalynn Win Haute Couture

Rosalynn Win is a name you need to know if you’re looking for that perfect bridal gown and artisan accessories. Veils, belts, silk garters and even Christening gowns…. You’re bound to be enchanted just as I was when I recently spent time with the lovely Sydney designer.

Gowns by Rosalynn Win and photography by Natasha Foster exclusively for this post.

With a background in fashion design and theatre costume, Rosalynn launched her couture wedding label in 2009 with the opening of her boutique in Paddington.  During that time her gowns were featured in countless magazines and on the red carpet and she gained recognition as a talented designer when she was awarded the Couture Designer of the Year by WEOA.

She spent six years in her Paddington boutique before deciding to add an extra dimension to her business and expand to include an online boutique.

“I found that there is a gap in the market for beautiful veils, belts and silk garters that are of high quality and are able to be passed on for generations or to be kept as one-of-a-kind mementos.”

She has now expanded into these very things.

Spending time with the designer, I learnt that a Rosalynn Win veil is made from the softest tulles with just the right amount of gathering and sheerness. For brides who prefer embellishment, there is a gorgeous selection of fine lace trims to fuller French lace scalloping or unique hand-beaded patterns to choose from. All veils are attached to strong metal combs that can be moulded to suit all hair types and styles.

It’s not fancy photography in this next image, it’s one of Rosalynn’s veils flying in the background.

In recent times belts have become a much sought after accessory to compliment bridal gowns. A great way to accentuate curves or add that finishing touch, Rosalynn Win belts have been exclusively designed from initial pattern to beading details using the finest of Swarovski crystal which means that many of her belts are one-off creations.

For the bride looking for a quality and personalised silk garter, look no further. With the option of having your name and wedding date embroidered onto the garter, it makes for a wonderful keepsake. Embroidering options come in soft silver, gold or even powder blue for that perfect and discrete something blue. Brides also have the option to have a sample of their wedding gown lace hand sewn and embellished as a feature on the garter too.

Kristine is photographed here in the “Montreux” gown with jewellery by Tessarella House.  For the make-up, I emphasised glowing skin and added a glossy winged liner against an almost nude eye. Hair was softly curled and worn loose.

Rosalynn has kindly invited my readers to her spring sample sale of her exclusive bridal couture collections. Future brides can enjoy 50% off these handmade, high-end bridal couture gowns in pure silk and European laces. There is also a selection of bridesmaid dresses and evening couture as worn by The Veronicas.  You might just find the perfect gown for your wedding, bridesmaid or Christmas party.  Thanks Rosalynn!

A thank you from Corina

There are moments in life where you think, yes…  this is why I do what I do.  I recently received a lovely note from one of my brides Corina and had that very moment.

Who says three’s a crowd!?

“It’s hard to put into words how happy I was with my make-up on my wedding day, one of the most wonderful days of my life to date. Sonia was so calm and professional on what was a very busy day (and very organised!). She is a true professional, yet so personable and wonderful to have around. She made me and my bridesmaids feel relaxed and confident. I would absolutely recommend her for brides who want a thoughtful and talented make-up artist, who is responsive to suggestions, yet has a very clear vision and a keen eye for accentuating your best features. Sonia knows how to make a bride look beautiful and that is exactly how I felt on the day. It was so lovely to have Sonia be a part of our day. We were all so impressed by her talent. I cannot thank her enough.”

With a future wife like that, I can understand why the groom is so happy!

I wish you all the happiness as you start your married life together.
